Adam Kellerman edged through the feature match on Monday’s first day of the Be Active Adelaide Open after becoming the second Australian player in successive weeks to beat South Africa’s Eliphas Maripa.

Maripa bowed out of last week’s Queensland Open in the semifinals against Australian No. 1 Ben Weekes and made a good start against Australian No. 2 Kellerman in Adelaide. However, Kellerman fought back to win 36 64 62, booking himself a quarterfinal against Korea Republic’s Sam-Ju Kim, who beat young Australian Henry de Cure 64 62.

After his semifinal win over Maripa last week in Brisbane, Weekes beat another South African player to start his Adelaide Open campaign. Weekes eased past Leon Els 60 61 and will now play Austria’s Mossier, who dropped just two games to Australian Keegan Oh-Chee.

With world No. 9 Gordon Reid of Great Britain having a first round bye, the top seed will open his 2013 season on Tuesday’s second day of play at the ITF 2 Series tournament against Steffen Sommerfeld after Sommerfeld defeated his fellow German Pedro Kruemmel 60 61.

Meanwhile, Queensland Open champion Martin Legner began his bid for back-to-back titles with a 60 60 win over Anderson Park.

Second seed Legner now faces Australian Jerry Markoja in a quarterfinal for the second successive week on the NEC Tour after Markoja followed up his first round at the Queensland Open by defeating Steve Fell 61 63.

With the women’s singles being contested as a five-way round-robin, Queensland Open champion and world No. 3 Sabine Ellerbrock opened her own bid for a second title in as many weeks by beating Australia’s Sarah Calati 60 60.

Korea Republic’s Ju-Yeon Park won the day’s other women’s singles match, beating Australia’s Janel Manns 61 62.
