Croatia’s Anto Joskic and Jozo Milos provided one of the highlights for their home fans on the first day of the Arcotel-Rezidencija 55 Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, in Zagreb, Croatia.
As the two players met in the first round for the second successive year, Joskic eventually edged past Milos 36 64 75 in one of the eight completed matches and will go on to face Austrian seventh seed and 2011 runner-up Thomas Mossier.
Leonid Shevchik of Russia won another of the three three set matches in the opening round of the ITF 2 Series tournament, defeating Croatia’s Zelijko Kladaric. Shevchik goes on to face Hungarian sixth seed Laszlo Farkas.
Karl Stefan was one of three Austrians to earn their places in the last 16 alongside their seeded compatriots Mossier and Martin Legner
Stefan overcame Italy’s Renzo Partel 63 46 64 to set up a second round meeting against eighth seed Steffen Sommerfeld of Germany.
There will be two Austrian-Polish match for a place in the quarterfinals after Dan Kleckner opened his tournament with a hard won 75 64 victory over Italy’s Paolo Cia to book a match against second seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki.
Meanwhile, Joseph Riegler will face second seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki of Poland after beating Drazen Miksic of Croatia 61 62.
Meanwhile, Kamil Fabisiak gav an added boost to Polish fortunes after easing to a 60 60 win over Croatia’s Tomilsav Cavar. Fabisiak now faces fourth seed and defending champion Fabian Mazzei of Italy.
