Houdet, Gravellier and Wagner clinch Pensacola titles

News Article

Stephane Houdet and Florence Gravellier secured a French double on Sunday as the Pensacola Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, came to a wet conclusion in Florida. Meanwhile, David Wagner (USA) successfully retained his Quad Singles title with a fepeat win over World No 1 Peter Norfolk (GBR).

After beating top seeds Robin Ammerlaan (NED) and third seed Tadeusz Kruszelnicki (POL) to reach the Men's Main Draw Singles final, Houdet slipped a set down to second seed and 2004 Penssacola Open champion Ronald Vink on Sunday. However, the French World No 9 recovered well to triumph 36 63 61, thereby denying Vink the distinction of becoming the first two's-time Men's Main Draw winner of the tournament.

In the final of the Women's Singles top seed Gravellier got the better of a closely fought contest against fourth seed Korie Homan as she triumphed 75 64 to win her first NEC Tour title of the year.

Wagner completed a hat-trick of Quad Singles titles in Pensacola. The World No 2 had split the first two sets of Sunday's final against World No 1 before the torrential rain that engulfed the area forced the player's off court. However, on the resumption, Wagner dominated the final set to seal a 64 46 61 win.

A great week for Houdet saw he and Kruszelnicki pair up to win the Men's Main Draw Doubles final, the second seed overcoming the unseed pairing of Ammerlaan and Jon Rydberg (USA) 64 76(1).

Gravellier was unable to follow up her singles win with victory in the Women's Doubles as her and Aniek Van Koot (NED) saw a first set lead disappear against Dutch top seeds Jiske Griffioen and Sharon Walraven (NED), who went on to win secure the title 26 62 61.

With Norfolk having picked up an injury during his Quad Singles final against Wagner, he and Sarah Hunter (CAN) had to forfeit their scheduled Quad Doubles final againt Dutch duo Bas Van Erp and Dorrie Timmermans Van Hall
