Gerard and Ellerbrock clinch Turin titles

Joachim Gerard and Sabine Ellerbrock completed the perfect preparation for the upcoming Super Series and Grand Slam events in USA by winning the men’s and women’s singles events on Saturday at the Trofeo della Mole, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, in Turin.

World No. 4 Gerard reached the men’s final in Turin for the second successive year after denying Britain’s David Phillipson a place in his second NEC Tour final in successive weeks. Top seed Gerard beat Wroclaw Cup runner-up and seventh seed Phillipson 62 63 to set up a final against another Briton, fourth seed Marc McCarroll.

McCarroll reached his second ITF 2 Series singles final of the year after coming from 4-1 down in the deciding set to beat second seed Frederic Cattaneo 64 46 64 for his first career win over the world No. 10. However, Gerard controlled the final from the start for a 62 62 victory to improve on his runners-up spot in 2012.

World No. 1 Ellerbrock claimed her second Trofeo della Mole title in three years after beating 2010 champion Annick Sevenans in straight sets to end hopes of a Belgian double in the singles events.

Ellerbrock beat the 2005 champion and last year’s runners-up Marianna Lauro 61 63 in the semifinals to end Italy’s hopes of a main draw singles title on home soil. Meanwhile, in her first tournament of the year after concentrating on her politics studies, fourth seed Sevenans came from set down to defeat Korean second seed Ju-Yeon Park 36 62 62 in the other semifinal.

However, Ellerbrock comfortably justified her position as top seed to ease through the final 63 60 for her seventh singles title of the year.

After bowing out of the Wroclaw Cup in the semifinals, Cattaneo and Martin Legner of Austria lived up to their top seeding in Turin to win the men’s doubles. Meanwhile, Britain’s Alfie Hewett and McCarroll, who beat Cattaneo and Legner in Poland, saw their own challenge falter in the last four this week when they were beaten by third seeds Phillipson and Tadeusz Kruszelnicki of Poland in a deciding championship tiebreak.

Phillipson and Kruszelnicki edged out second seeds Hewett and McCarroll 76(1) 16 (10-8) to earn their place in the final. Despite taking Cattaneo and Legner to another championship tiebreak they eventually missed out on the title as Cattaneo and Legner came from behind to seal a a 46 62 (10-6) win for their sixth doubles title together this season.

Park and Sevenans clinched he women’s doubles title after beating French top seeds Emile Chene and Pauline Helouin 76(3) 61.
