Belgium's Joachim Gerard retained his men’s singles title in Sunday’s final day of the Toyota Open de L’Ile de Re, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. Katharina Kruger of Germany went one better than her runners-up spot in 2011 to claim the women’s singles title at the ITF 2 Series tournament in France.
For the second successive year, world No. 4 Gerard took on two-time champion Nicolas Peifer of France in the men’s singles final and world No. 8 Peifer put up a tremendous challenge as he attempted to add to his 2010 and 2011 titles. However, Gerard held on to secure the decisive break midway through the deciding set for a 64 57 64 repeat victory.
Top seed Kruger was contesting her fifth NEC Tour women’s singles final of 2013 and her third at ITF 2 Series level. She broke a sequence of three successive three-set matches against Charlotte Famin of France as Famin’s bid for the first ITF 2 Series title of her career ended with Kruger prevailing 64 62.
Italy’s Antonio Raffaele won the quad singles title on Saturday’s penultimate day of competition. Top seed Raffaele clinched his second ITF 2 Series title with a 64 26 63 win over British second seed Adam Field.
