Defending men’s singles and quad singles champions Gordon Reid and Bryan Barten made comfortable starts to their challenges at this year’s PTR Championships on Friday on Hilton Head Island, while former two time champion Lucy Shuker also made a good start to her women’s singles campaign. However, the fourth seeded players in both the women’s singles and quad singles went out of the tournament.
Jessica Sporte wasted little time in beating fourth seed Annabelle Ribeaud of Switzerland 60 61 to reach the women’s singles semifinals, where Sporte will play top seed Shuker. The Briton, who was the winner on Hilton Head in 2009 and 2010 and the runner-up last year, eased past American Jan Proctor 61 63 in her opening match this year.
Like Sporte, third seed Francisca Mardones of Chile also progressed 60 61 as she swept aside Kate Stuteville, while German second seed Katharina Kruger defeated American Lynn Seidemann 61 61.
Reid opens title defence in style
Top seed Reid began his bid for a fourth straight men’s singles title by beating Yoann Quilliou of France 61 62 and booking his place in the last four against another Frenchman, third seed Frederic Cazeaudumec, who defeated USA’s John Becker 62 64.
There will be an all-American semifinal in the bottom half of the men’s singles draw after second seed Stephen Welch beat Thomas Vinatier of France 63 60 and fourth seed Steve Baldwin beat Canada’s Philippe Bedard 64 61.
American and British players to contest quad singles semis
The quad singles could yet have an all-American or all-British final, but fourth seed Greg Hasterok saw his title challenge come to an end in his first match after he lost out 62 64 to fellow American David Buck.
Antony Cotterill and Adam Field reached the quad singles semifinals after both Britons also progressed in straight sets.
Second seed Cotterill began his tournament by defeating David Jordan 64 64 and will now play Buck. Meanwhile, third seed Field beat Francois Trawalter 63 64 to book a semifinal against top seed Barten. Top seed and world No. 10 Barten opened his title defence with a 64 62 win over Canada’s Gary Luker.
