Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina and Sharon Walraven of the Netherlands won the men’s singles and women’s singles titles as the 10th Trofeo della Mole, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, came to and on Saturday in Torino.
Top seed Fernandez and second seed Joachim Gerard of Belgium went head-to-head for the fifth time this season in the men’s singles, with Gerard starting well to maintain his hopes of following up his Ath Open victory last weekend.
However, world No. 5 Fernandez started to control the match in the second set and, after the two players went to a third and deciding set for the fourth time in a row, Fernandez finally maintained his unbeaten sequence against Gerard this season to wrap up a 67(0) 62 63 victory.
Both players will now head to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The last time that Walraven met Italian second seed Marianna Lauro the Dutchwoman was taken to a third set tiebreak at the 2011 Sardinia Open, but top seed Walraven ensured a more comfortable victory this time as the world No. 8 sealed a 62 64 win to claim her first NEC Tour title of 2012.
Such is the strength of Dutch women’s wheelchair tennis Walraven will not be among the players at the London 2012 Parlympics, but Lauro will be Italy’s sol representative in the women’s singles.
