David Dalmasso booked a place in his second ITF 2 Series quarterfinal of 2013 as he became the only non-seeded player to reach the last eight of the men’s singles on the second day of the Trodeo della Mole, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

After starting this week’s ITF 2 series event in Turin ranked just two places below eighth seed Alfie Hewett of Great Britain, Dalmasso edged out the 15-year-old world No. 1 junior 64 64 to set up an all-French quarterfinal against second seed Frederic Cattaneo, who ended Italian hopes in the men’s singles after beating Fabian Mazzei 61 75.

Fourth seed Marc McCarroll of Great Britain and sixth Tadeusz Kruszelnicki of Poland will meet in the other quarterfinal in the bottom half of the draw after both securing comfortable straight sets wins over Belgium’s Mike Denayer and Sebastien Husser of France.

After being forced to retire from his quarterfinal against Britain’s David Phillipson at last week’s Wroclaw Cup due the frame on his tennis chair breaking, third seed Martin Legner earned the chance to play Phillipson again after the Austrian defeated Switzerland’s Daniel Pellegrina 62 63. Meanwhile, having finished runner-up in Wroclaw, Phillipson dented Polish hopes in Turin after beating Albin Batycki 60 62.

Australia’s Adam Kellerman won his first ITF 2 Series title at the Wroclaw Cup and Kellerman maintained his bid for back-to-back NEC Tour titles with a  60 61 win over Morocco’s Ahmed Jeddi as the seeded players began their campaigns in Turin. Fifth seed Kellerman will play Belgian top seed and 2012 Trofeo della Mole runner-up Joachim Gerard for a place in the semifinals after world No. 4 Gerard advanced with a 61 63 win over Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi.

Women’s semifinal line-up decided

Three former champions are among the women’s singles semifinalists, with 2011 champion and world No. 1 Sabine Ellerbrock set to meet 2005 champion and two-time runner-up Marianna Lauro for a place in this year’s final.

Lauro had the toughest quarterfinal of all the four semifinalists, but held on in a tight second set to beat her fellow Italian Stefania Galletti 62 75. Meanwhile, Ellerbrock and 2010 champion Annick Sevenans dropped just one game apiece, Ellerbrock easing past Japan’s Kanako Domori and Sevenans defeating Korea Republic’s Myung-Hee Hwang.

Korean hopes stayed alive thanks to second seed Ju-Yeon Park after last week’s Wroclaw Cup champion swept past Denmark’s Louise Willersley-Olsen 60 62. Park and Sevenans will now meet for just the second time on the NEC Tour, Sevenans having won a close quarterfinal at the Cesenatico Open, also in Italy, in 2006.
