Colombia made a winning start to the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Americas Qualification event in Pensacola on Wednesday after a 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico in the day’s only tie.
Manuel Sanchez Quitian provided the foundation for Colombia’s victory in Pool 1 when he won the important points to defeat unranked Puerto Rican Anthony Seijo 63 63.
Thereafter Mauricio Vega put the tie beyond Puerto Rico when he beat Hector Maldonado 60 62 and Vega and Sanchez Quitian paired up to complete Colombia’s victory with a 60 62 win over Maldonado and Miguel Lozada in the doubles rubber.
Colombia now have a rest day on Thursday’s second day of play, when Puerto Rico take on El Salvador, while top seeds Canada play their Pool 2 tie against Guatemala.
Colombia will complete the round-robin ties on Friday when they take on El Salvador before the final and the third and fourth place play-off both take place on Saturday.
