As well as it being a new format for the event it is also the first year that BNP Paribas have been title sponsors of the ITF’s flagship wheelchair tennis event.
Eight nations will contest the qualifying competition for the Americas, which will take place in Mexico City on 20-24 February, while the qualifying competitions for Africa and Europe both take place on 28 February-2 March in Kenya and Turkey respectively.
Once all four qualification competitions have been completed and the direct qualification slots from each of the regional qualifications competitions have been confirmed, the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Committee will award wild cards for the two remaining places available in the men’s World Group 2.
“This is a very exciting year for wheelchair tennis and for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup as we welcome BNP Paribas as the title sponsor for the first time and introduce the new format for the competition,” said ITF Wheelchair Tennis Manager Mark Bullock. “We are also delighted the Asia will host the BNP World Team Cup 2012 for the first time and in this Paralympic year it is especially significant that the venue is the Olympic Park Tennis Centre, where the Paralympic journey for wheelchair tennis began 24 years ago.”
