Argentina and USA guaranteed singles gold medals

The 2011 Parapanam Games men’s and women’s singles gold medals will go to Argentina and USA respectively following the conclusion of Wednesday’s semifinals in Guadalajara.

Argentina’s Augustin Ledesma recovered from 3-0 down in the first of his men’s singles semifinal against former world No. 1 Stephen Welch of USA to beat the former Paralympic Games medallist 63 76(3), while world No. 1 ranked junior Gustavo Fernandez dominated the early stages of his semifinal against third seed Robinson Mendez of Chile to win 61 64.

In the women’s singles semifinals Colombia’s Angelica Bernal looked to be on course to take her semifinal against American Emmy Kaiser to a third set, but third seed Kaiser held on to win 61 76(5).

Meanwhile, Mackenzie Soldan completed the all-American line-up for Thursday’s final with a hard-won 75 64 victory over Chilean fourth seed Francisca Mardones.

Kaiser and Soldan also take American hopes of a gold medal into the women’s doubles final after defeating Chilean top seeds Mardones and Maria Antonieta Ortiz 64 36 64 in the semifinals.

Kaiser and Soldan face Bernal and Johana Martinez in the final after the Colombian team eased to a 61 60 victory in their semifinal

Top seeds Fernandez and Ledesma face second seeds Jon Rydberg and Welch in the men’s doubles gold medal match as Argentina and USA go head-to-head once again.
