Ammerlaan, Yaosa and Norfolk net Nottingham Indoor titles

NEWS ARTICLE

Robin Ammerlaan (NED), Mie Yaoso (JPN) and Peter Norfolk (GBR) won the three Main Draw Singles finals as the 12th Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, drew to a close on Sunday at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre.

Top seed Ammerlaan, who won the British Open title on his last visit to Nottingham in July, completed a winning debut at the ITF 2 Series Nottingham Indoors in an all-Dutch Men’s Main Draw Singles final. Ammerlaan won the first two games of the match against compatriot and second seed Maikel Schefffers for the loss of just one point, and although Scheffers retrieved the break over the course of the next two games it was very nearly one-way traffic from there on as World No 2 Ammerlaan went on to complete a 62 60 victory.

In the Women’s Singles final Japanese third seed Yaosa followed up her surprise win over top seed and defending champion Jiske Griffioen (NED) in Saturday’s semi-finals with a three set victory over unseeded Belgian Brigitte Ameryckx.

A closely fought first set saw Yaosa convert the decisive service break in the tenth game, but Ameryckx fought back to lead 42 in the second set before going on to level the match. However, Yaosa regained control in the final set, going on to seal a 64 26 61 win.

In the Quad Singles World No 1 Norfolk completed a successful defence of his Nottingham Indoors title in devastating fashion. For the second successive year Norfolk played Israeli second seed Shraga Weinberg in the final, but this year’s match was more clear-cut than last year as Norfolk powered to a 60 62 win.

The Men’s Main Draw Doubles final went to top seeds Ammerlaan and Scheffers, who defeated second seeds Majdi and Gert Vos (BEL) 61 63.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Doubles final saw top seeds Griffioen and Ameryckx gain some compensation for their respective singles defeats when they beat second seeds Yaosa and Katharina Kruger of Germany 62 62.

In the Quad Doubles final second seeds Giuseppe Polidori and Antonio Raffaele (ITA) defeated the top seeded Dutch pairing of Monique De Beer and Bas Van Erp 64 62.
