Colour testing equipment
Although the Rules of Tennis only specify that a tennis ball must be white or yellow, the ITF Technical Centre monitors the colour of tennis balls using a spectrophotometer linked to a computer.

This records the colour of each ball on the L*a*b* scale. The scale specifies colour three-dimensionally (an L* axis, an a* axis and a b* axis). These represent lightness, redness-greenness and yellowness-blueness respectively.
