| Rankings - Overview |
To receive ranking points in a singles knockout event a player must reach a round where points are available. In round robin events points are awarded for each match won (see points allocation page). The number of points available varies depending upon the grading of the tournament and the round reached.
The official published rankings are calculated on a 52-week rollover system and published throughout the year, at dates to be confirmed by the ITF. The end of year ranking is issued after the final event in December. Each ranking takes into account only points earned in the preceding 12 months from the ranking date. At any given time, however, only the latest ITF Seniors and Super-Seniors Championships' results count for ranking purposes.
Projected rank dates for 2008 are as follows:
3rd March
2nd June
18th August
3rd November (following the ITF Seniors and Super-Seniors World Championships in Turkey)
22nd December (year end)
The best four singles results in ITF Seniors Circuit Tournaments are taken into consideration for the final ranking. Tournaments eligible for ranking for ranking points are Category A, Category B1 and B2 and Grades 1-4 on the ITF Senior Circuit calendar.
If two or more players receive the same number of points, their ranking follows the number of points they scored in the ITF World Championships, (Category A and B1). If two or more players are still equal, players are ranked based on the grading of tournaments where points have been won.
Allocation of Points
Tournaments are graded based mainly on a computer evaluation of the standard of participant competing in the previous year's tournament, while maintaining a geographical balance, with ranking points as listed on the points allocation page.
Points are awarded for singles play only. No points are awarded to a player until he/she has won a round. Walkovers count as a match won. Byes do not count as a match won. In order to qualify for ranking points in singles knockout events there must be a minimum of 8 competitors in the main draw.
If a tournament is abandoned, players will receive points for the round reached up to that point.
Should any Age Group in an ITF Seniors Circuit event be amalgamated with a lower Age Group event, and players in the former be forced to play down, then those players shall be awarded points in his/her own age group provided that the event organiser notifies the ITF of the amalgamation and the date of birth of the player winning points is known.
When there are fewer than eight (8) players entered in an event a round robin event should be played, with points awarded as shown on the points allocation page. For more details please see section 14b of the ITF Seniors Regulations.
Age Groups
The ITF Seniors Ranking is calculated for the following age groups:
Men: 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85
Women: 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80
To be eligible to participate in any age group, a player shall have reached the minimum age limit by 31st December of the year in which the competition is held.
A player may play in more than one age group if the rules permit, and therefore may appear in more than one age group ranking.
Players moving Age Category
All players moving to an older age category take all their ranking points with them. These players are marked as 'BIS' on the ranking list. Players continue to be marked 'BIS' until their ranking no longer includes points won in the previous age category. This could be because points have been won in the age category or because the points have expired after 52 weeks. See Section 13 of the ITF Seniors Regulations.
