The Super-Seniors World Team Championships was painted gold and green today as the home nation dominated semifinal day. A total of seven Australia teams qualified to participate in tomorrow’s nine finals.
Last year's Queens' Cup final was contested by USA & Canada, with the Americans taking the title 2-1. Today’s semifinals included a repeat of last year's final. Joan Bradich (CAN) struck first for Canada, sealing the first singles rubber 64 57 76. American team number one Mary Boswell levelled the tie at 1-1 with a 63 62 victory over Muffie Grieve (CAN). Boswell partnered Lee Burling to defeat the Canadian pair of Muffie Grieve & Joyce Cutts 64 60 and earn their team the chance to defend their 2008 crown. For the first time in the Cup's history, an Australian team will contest the title. Australia defeated their opponents, New Zealand 3-0, with Margaret Robinson (AUS) sealing the win with a 63 67 60 victory over Elaine Stephan (NZL).
In the Alice Marble Cup, defending champions and top seeds France defeated third seeds USA to set up a decisive round robin match against home nation Australia. Nicol Hesse-Cazaux’s victory over Martha Downing in the second singles clinched the victory for the reigning champions.
Great Britain last won the Kitty Godfree Cup over a decade ago. Twice losing finalists in the past ten years, the second seed British team will be hoping it is third time lucky as they compete with fourth seeds Australia for the title on Saturday. The teams from USA and France will contest the third place play-off.
South Africa will be defending their current title as the Althea Gibson Cup holders. The 2008 champions defeated USA for the honour last year. This year the South Africans will face Australia in the final. Great Britain and USA will take to the court to contest the third place play-off.
For only the second time in the 27 year history of the event, the final of the Jack Crawford Cup will not see a USA team contesting for the title. And for very the first time it will see a New Zealand team step on court on finals day. New Zealand were clearly in the mood to create an upset today, as they drew the USA into an immediate battle. Lyndsey Gordon (NZL) defeated Fred Farzanegan (USA) 75 67(3) 64 in the first singles rubber, before Mose Harvey sealed the victory with a 64 76 win over George Sarantos. Harvey then combined with Evan De la Rue, but the New Zealanders were unable to match their American doubles opponents, who claimed a consolation victory 63 64. In the second semifinal, Norway faced Australia. In perhaps the story of the championships, the unseeded Norwegian team had stormed their way through the round robin stages. As the designated underdogs in each tie, the Norwegians had upset the odds time and again to reach the semifinals. Despite making history by reaching the semifinal of the Cup, the Norwegians were not able to extend their fairytale run of results against Australia. The Australian team were in pre-eminent form, taking the tie 3-0. The result ends Norway’s hopes but the team has impressed and entertained in equal measure this week.
In the Von Cramm Cup, Spain defeated France 2-1 with victories for world number one Jorge Camina in the second singles of the day and then again in the doubles with partner Jairo Velasco. The victory sees the top seeds play the third seeds, USA, in the final. The USA comprehensively defeated the second seeds, the Netherlands in their semifinal.
In the Britannia Cup, second seeds Australia will look to reclaim the title they last held in 2007. They will face top seeds USA, who have not won the Britannia Cup for five years. Germany and France will contest the third place play-off.
In the Bitsy Grant Cup, the home nation suffered a rare defeat as USA beat Australia 3-0 in their round robin match. USA will face France tomorrow in the decisive contest.
In the Gardnar Mulloy Cup, Australia defeated New Zealand 3-0, whilst USA defeated France 2-1, to set up an Australia v USA final tomorrow.
