| Obituary - Nancy Reed |
The ITF was deeply saddened to learn of the death on July 25th of Nancy Reed, a three-time ITF Seniors Singles World Champion and a pioneer of Seniors Tennis.
Nancy’s ITF Seniors career began at the very first ITF Seniors World Championships in Brazil in 1981. She won the women’s 40 doubles with fellow American Mary Ann Plante, the first of 12 doubles World Championship crowns. Her first singles win came in Sicily in 1992 in the 55 age category, a victory which she followed up by winning the 60 age category the following year. Nancy’s third and final singles world title came in 1999, but her days of winning World Championships were far from over. Along with Australian Margaret Robinson she won the doubles world title in the 75 age category in Turkey just nine months ago. Nancy was also a member of the US team which won the Queens’ Cup in Turkey in October, the last of several occasions when she helped her team to the world title.
Nancy was also very active in tennis in the USA, winning nearly 100 USTA national championships. Her involvement in the sport was not limited to on-court activities, however, as she contributed to American Seniors tennis as a volunteer at both state and national level, winning many awards for her effort and commitment.
Nancy had many dealings with the ITF both as a player and an administrator, and she will be greatly missed.
Her memorial service will take place at Rollins College Chapel, Winter Park, Florida, on Thursday July 30th at 4pm.
