New Seniors World Champions claim titles in Mallorca
The 29th Seniors World Individual Championships came to a close today in Mallorca, Spain. A total of 865 matches have been played across the three venues with a total of 550 competitors throughout the week.

After the conclusion of three of the seven singles finals yesterday, spectators were spoilt for choice today as the remaining titles were decided. Spain claimed their second title today as Eduard Osta beat Mike Fedderly of the USA in the Men’s 50 event. In his first ever Seniors World Championships Osta has looked a potent force and dominated from the beginning of the contest, running away with today’s final 64 62.

Spain was denied a further title in the Men’s 45 as Austria’s Manfred Hundstorfer beat Alberto Tous (ESP) to claim his second consecutive title. There was nothing between them in the first set as it reached a tie-break, however it was Hundstorfer who held his nerve to claim the first set before racing to a 61 victory in the second.

The tightest match of the day was the Men’s 55 final between second seed Roger Guedes (BRA) against 2005 Champion Alan Rasmussen (DEN). After dropping the first set 62 the 2005 Champion fought back to take the second set 75 and take the match into a third set. It was anyone’s match going into the tie-break in the third set, however it was Rasmussen who was able to seal victory in the closely fought contest to take his second title.

Benjamin Budziak (POL) took his first title today in the Men’s 35 singles, storming to a straight sets victory over Clemens Weinhandl (AUT).

The Women’s 45 was a one-sided affair with France’s Marie Calleja taking on five times former champion Klaartje Van Baarle (BEL), who had dropped a total of just nine games going into today’s final. Van Baarle dominated from the outset, sealing a 60 61 victory over Calleja to take her sixth singles title.

Brazil’s Patricia Medrado also enjoyed a straightforward victory over her opponent, Diane Fishburne (USA), in the Women’s 50. Medrado was clearly superior to the rest of the field, not dropping a set on her way through to the final where she disposed of Fishburne 61 64.

The Women’s 40 was a closer contest, pitting Norway’s Amy Jonsson-Raaholt against Germany’s Sabine Krein Auer. Krein Auer emerged victorious in straight sets to win the final and claim her first title.

In the Men’s 40 event Manfred Hundstorfer added the doubles title to the singles crown her won earlier in the day when he and his compatriot Bart Theelen (NED) defeated Raj Bonifacus and Alexander Lindholm in three sets.

The Men’s 45 doubles also went the distance, seeing Tom Coulton (USA) and Jan Gunnarsson (SWE) overcome their opponents Simon Arms and Bruce Ferguson (AUS) 75 36 60.

The Men’s 50 doubles was the 865th and final match of the Championships and was an all American affair. 2007 champions Val Wilder and Mike Fedderly took on Dan Waldman and Egan Adams in this closely fought contest. Adams and Waldman took the first set 63, but the top seeds hit back to win the second 62. It was all to play for in the third, and the third seeds were the ones to come through, needing four match points before sealing victory at 64.
