World Individual Championships begins in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, USA: Today saw the first day of main draw matches at 2012 Seniors World Individual Championships in San Diego, USA. Although a delayed start as a result of overnight rain, matches took place across various age categories at different venues.  Play also took place in mixed doubles for the first time in the championships history.

The men's 45 saw the completion of the first round with no upsets as all seeds progressed through to the second round by virtue of byes.

The men's 50 saw 3 seeds fall on the first day.  Number eight seed Marcelo Vita (ARG) was the highest seed to exit the tournament as this early stage with Kelly Evernden winning the match convincingly 60 63. Number 15 seed Juerg Huesler (SUI) with a current ranking of 44 also failed to reach the second round with a loss of 46 16 to Ken Wright (USA) whose current ITF ranking is 359 places lower.

In the men's 55, a draw size of 128 resulted in a qualifying draw taking place over Friday and Saturday.  Andrew Rae (AUS) was to commence his start to the individual’s event in style progressing to the second round with a win over Don Abbott (USA) without losing a game. Number eight seed Mark Vine was to join him same score in his win over Bendicht Huegli (SUI).

History was made when mixed doubles was included in the world championships for the first time.  Four mixed doubles age categories took place today (XD40, XD45, XD50, XD55) with the remaining taking place tomorrow.

Both the men’s doubles and women’s doubles will start on Tuesday.

Monday sees the start of the remaining singles and mixed doubles matches with Tuesday starting men's and women's doubles.
