The 43rd Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Seniors Tennis Championships provided an engaging weekend of action at the Weston Creek Tennis Club in Canberra on 29 March -1 April as a number of surprise results took place.
One of the biggest upsets was delivered by unseeded Australian Igor Jovanovic, who took the men’s 40s title. Jovanovic, a former touring player, has taken a strong interest in seniors tennis and his involvement could prove very exciting for future events on the calendar.
Benefiting from four days of fine weather, the championships attracted entries from all states of Australia as well as players from Jordan, Japan, Great Britain, and New Zealand. In addition the field also comprised 13 past and present Australian team representatives.
Events this year included ITF singles, doubles and mixed doubles as well as non-sanctioned events for the less competitive players. These events also served as consolation events for the ITF events.
Scott Utley, last year's champion in the men’s 35s category, was seeded at No. 12 in the men’s 35s category but defied his lowly seeding to overcome the No. 1 seed in three hard fought sets, prevailing 63 26 64 to retain his title.
Another long match took place in the men’s 45s with fourth seed Michael Vickery taking the title after defeating top seeded Australian Mark Hodgson 62 67 62. The upsets continued across throughout the weekend and in total just three singles events were won by the No. 1 seed.
The doubles and mixed doubles also attracted plenty of interest with many players wishing to establish themselves in the ITF Seniors Doubles Rankings.
In addition to the tennis, players, partners and friends were also treated to a dinner dance on the Saturday night as a series of fun games were played and a very entertaining night was enjoyed by all. The ACT Tournament Committee had put in a large amount of work to ensure the players had an enjoyable tournament in what proved to be a very successful Easter weekend.
