Semifinal and Final line-ups decided in San Diego

The first three days of the Seniors World Team Championships have seen the top seeds made their way quickly through the draws. With semifinal and final line-ups being decided today in San Diego there were plenty of close encounters and some surprising results.

Italia Cup Men’s 35

With most teams already through from the round robin to the semifinal stages, just one quarterfinal was played today in the Italia Cup. Great Britain, seeded third, defeated fifth seeds Mexico 2-1 to earn their place in the semis against top seeded Spain.  Second seeds France will play ninth seeds Estonia in the other semi tomorrow.

Suzanne Lenglen Cup Women’s 35

Both semifinals were played today, top seeds France overcoming fourth seeds USA and Great Britain, seeded third, causing a minor upset by beating second seeds Spain.   France and Great Britain will play for the title tomorrow at La Costa in a match featuring the last two winners of the Cup.

Tony Trabert Cup Men’s 40

The Tony Trabert Cup also had just one quarterfinal today, seventh seeds the Netherlands upsetting third seeded Germany with two straight sets singles wins.  Frank van de Heuvel beat Ingo Herzegerodt and Marcus Hilpert defeated Christoph Back to put the Dutch into the semis where they will face top seeds France, while second seeds USA take on fourth seeded Spain in the other semi.

Young Cup Women’s 40

The last stage of the Young Cup is a round-robin competition between USA, France and Spain.  Second seeds France took on third seeds Spain today, and while the French win may not have been a shock the scorelines certainly were.  Former top 10 WTA player Sandrine Testud beat reigning seniors world individual champion Ana Salas 61 61, while Olivia Cappelletti beat former seniors world champion Noelia Perez 62 62 to put France in pole position in the group.  France also had an emphatic win in the doubles.  Spain get another chance for victory tomorrow against USA, while the France-USA battle will finish the competition on Saturday.

Dubler Cup Men’s 45

With top seeds France having a bye into the semis, six other teams fought to join them today at Morgan Run.  Third seeded Italy were the first ones to make it, easing past sixth seeds the Netherlands with singles wins for Enrico Casadei and Paolo Pambianco.   The other two matches were much closer, as second seeds USA needed a deciding doubles to overcome seventh seeds Spain, and Great Britain, seeded fifth, caused an upset by knocking out fourth seeds Austria, also in a deciding doubles.  Tomorrow the British team will take on France, while USA will play Italy.

Margaret Court Cup Women’s 45

The final line-up was decided today in the Margaret Court Cup, with France and Ireland making it through their respective semis.  Ireland followed up their win against top seeds USA with a victory over Germany, again needing a deciding doubles.  Second seeds France had a more straightforward 2-0 win over South Africa.

Fred Perry Cup Men’s 50

Three quarterfinals were played today at La Jolla, with six teams battling to join USA in the semis.  Second seeds Spain duly took their place in the last four with a 2-1 win over seventh seeds Australia, Francisco Garcia and Juan Rodriguez getting the singles wins before the Australians came back to win the doubles point.  France, seeded fifth, caused an upset by beating third seeds Great Britain for the loss of just five games in three matches.  France take on Spain in the semifinals, while USA play Italy for a place in the final.

Maria Esther Bueno Cup Women’s 50

Great Britain, seeded fifth, made it into the semis with a 3-0 win over fourth seeds Italy today. Both singles were tightly contested affairs, with Anthea Stewart beating Simonetta Bozzano 76 46 64 in the first match before Chris French beat Francesca Ciardi 60 57 64 in the clash of the no.1s.The British then wrapped up the tie with an easy doubles win.  They will play top seeds USA in the semis, while second seeds Australia take on third seeds the Netherlands in the other half of the draw.

Austria Cup Men's 55

Third seeds Spain losing to fifith seed Great Britiain was the major upset of the day in this age category. Miguel Mir was to take the first singles match with a 61 75 win over Paul French. After a close three set match, Alec Allen took the second singles to level the tie.  A hard fought three set doubles was to see Great Britain take the tie and progress to the semifinals.  The other match played in this cup saw another tight contest with Netherlands progressing to the semi final with a 2-1 win over Belgium.  Top seed USA and second seed Australia progressed into the semifinal with a bye. 

Maureen Connolly Cup Women's 55

The Maureen Connolly cup saw both USA and Great Britain progress to the final with 3-0 wins for both setting up a repeat of the 2010 final.
