News Article

Italian Elena Scola defeated Germany's Olga Shaposhnikova in a thrilling three sets in one of the stand out finals at the 44th International Championships of Italy, which concluded on Sunday.

The Italian world No. 5 won the Womens Over 45s category final 76(4) 67(1) 63 to claim her first title of 2013 on home soil.

There were a number of fine performances across the other age categories at the event, held on 13-21 April on red clay at the Hanbury Tennis Club in Alassio.

Gail Benedetti claimed the title in the Womens Over 65 Category, beating Sylvie Galfard-Kirsten in an all-French contest. Benedetti is the current world No. 1 in this age category and this was her second title of the year after winning the Tournoi International de Menton ITF Seniors Plus, in Menton, France in March.

The Mens Over 35 Category was won by Bernard Kaczorowski of Poland after a battling three-set victory against Italian David Casale. Currently ranked No. 5 in the ITF Seniors rankings, this is Kaczorowski's first title since winning the ITF GMP Cup in Umag, Croatia almost a year previously in May 2012.

The eldest age group on show was the Mens Over 85 Category and was won by impressive Italian Guido Trevisan, who beat Francisco Guillen of Germany 75 62 in the final. In doing so he defended the title he claimed 12 months ago.
