MARKHAN, ONTARIO, CANADA:  The Mayfair Racquet and Fitness Clubs in Markham, Ontario hosted this Grade 3 ITF senior’s circuit event over the weekend of 6-8 January 2012. The weekend saw a number of returning champions who produced some excellent tennis and memorable matches.

In the men’s 35’s, Adam Baranowski (CAN) produced a powerful display of all-court tennis to beat his countryman Olivier Borlee 63 62 in the final.

The final of the men’s 40’s was a repeat of last year with Karl Hale (CAN) facing Benjamin Woo (CAN). Hale avenged last year’s defeat in a comfortable 63 61 victory.

Glenn Michibata (CAN), a former top five doubles players on the ATP tour and Australian Open doubles finalist, won the men’s 45’s without dropping a set, defeating Dariusz Kozak 60 61 in the final

In the men’s 50’s final, Denis Dumas (CAN), fighting off a headcold and a stubborn opponent, defeated countryman Cary Willson 67 75 64 in a match that lasted over three and a half hours.

Jean-Pierre Cote cruised to a 63 60 victory over Fraser MacDonald in the men’s 55’s. Cote, like Michibata, won the title without dropping a set throughout the tournament.

In the men’s 60’s, Dennis Ing defeated Daryl Howes-Jones 62, 46, 61 in the final. Howes-Jones, who upset no. 4 seed John Payne along the way, tried his best to keep up with Ing but came up just short in his first ITF Senior final since 2008.

In the men’s 65’s, Hani Ayoub withstood the charge of 70-year-old Shaheer Mikhail in a tight three-set encounter, eventually prevailing 61 67(2) 62 in just over two and a half hours.

There was more Canadian success in all three women’s events with Erin Boynton continuing her dominance in the women’s 35’s, defeating Patty Thornicroft 61 62 in the final.

In the women’s 45’s, Catherine Litton (CAN) defeated Janice Hebert (CAN) in a close two-set affair 75 63. This is Litton’s first Senior ITF crown in almost five years.

In the women’s 55’s Michelle Hall came back from a set down to defeat Frances Critchley 46 62 60 and take the title.

The Wilson/Mayfair tour is a four-tournament circuit that has been running for 10 years at Mayfair Clubs in Toronto. The next stop on the tour is March 2-4, 2012.
