UMAG, CROATIA: Peter Pokorny from Austria, the top seed in the Men’s 70 singles, is on course for his eighth Individual Singles World Championship title after another straightforward victory today. Pokorny helped Austria to the team title in Novigrad last week beat Bernd Gutsche (GER) 62 63 and will now face Hungarian Karoly Palchuber in the fourth round. There is a strong Italian presence in this age division with Giovanni Argentini, Giancarlo Milesi and second seed Vittorio Monaco all progressing today.

The quarter final line up was decided in the Women’s 70 singles today with the top two seeds looking set to meet each other in this weekend’s final. The top seeded Austrian and defending world champion Sofia Garaguly defeated Margaret Wayte (AUS) 61 60 to set up a last eight encounter with Claudine Contoz from France. Garaguly’s likely opponent in the final is second does Heide Orth from Germany. Orth, who is in her first year in this age division and has in fact beaten Garaguly in three ITF Senior Circuit events this summer, will be confident of winning her tenth world singles title.

Familiar faces make up the quarter final line up of the Men’s 65 singles draw with former singles World Champions Hans Adama van Scheltema (NED), Jorge Camina Borda (ESP) and Petr Kolacek (SUI) all looking in fine form this week. Camina Borda beat Rene Bortolani of Switzerland for the loss of only one game and will now face Dutchman Van Scheltema. Second seeded Kolacek dropped only three games in his victory over Australian Alan Walsh whilst other quarter finalists include Mark Cox (GBR) and Kenneth Dahl (CAN).

There is the possibility of an all Canadian final in the women’s 80’s after Muffie Grieve upset the top seed Erzsebet Szentirmay (HUN) today. Canadian Grieve will now face Margaret Canby of the USA in the semi-finals. Second seed, defending champion and fellow Canadian Rosemarie Asch defeated Wil Sevenstern of the Netherlands 61 63 today, and will face Colette Valere-Chochod of France in the other semi-final.

Play was brought to a premature end at 4pm as the heavens opened and a heavy rain shower began. For full draws, results and order of play please click the link at the bottom of the page.
