CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA: The 42nd Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Seniors Tennis Championships were held from 6-9 April at the Weston Creek Tennis Club in Canberra, Australia.
The championships attracted entries from all states in Australia as well as two players from Hong Kong and one representing Italy. The field also comprised 12 past and present Australian team representatives and was played in warm and sunny conditions throughout.
The singles events were conducted under the new ITF regulations which required players to have an IPIN. Apart from the ITF singles a number of other events were held. These being doubles, mixed, combined age r/r and other special events.
It wasn't all tennis at the tournament. A dinner dance was held on the Saturday night for the players, partners and friends. The highlight of the night was the surprise performance by Lynton Joseph, men’s 40 runner up, who did his Elvis Presley impersonation in full costume. An excellent performance enjoyed by all.
The tournament was blessed with some high quality performances. In the men’s 50 final Greg Westwood (AUS) defeated Manual Radic (AUS) in three tight sets and it was just as tense in the men’s 65 which saw Ian Davis defeat Hayden Rees 46 76 76. Rees served for the match in both the second and third sets but steady play by Davis during the crucial points saw him through.
Other notable performers included Scott Utley who followed up on his national Australian title and is now looking forward to representing Australia. Wayne Cowley won the men’s 55, making steady progress back to the form which won him a world title in 1998. Wayne suffered a stroke a number of years ago and he is showing a steady and remarkable recovery.
