Day 2 at the Super-Seniors World Individual Championships

The Super-Seniors World Individual Championships got really rolling today with 290 matches being played in the three cities of Klagenfurt, Pörtschach and Villach in Carinthia.

In the big men’s draws of men’s 60, 65 and 70, the round of 64 was played today. The four top seeds in the men’s 60 Andrew Rae (AUS), Bruno Renoult (FRA), Wayne Cowley (AUS) and Roger Guedes (BRA) scored comfortable wins. The highest seed to fall today in the men’s 60 was the Andrew Stanley from Great Britain who had to pull out from his match against Wolfgang Potutschnig from the host nation Austria due to injury.

In the men’s 65, top seed Peter Adrigan (GER), as well as the second seed Jorge Camina (ESP) and the defending champion Petr Kolacek (SUI) cruised through their opening matches.

In the men’s 70, local hero Peter Pokorny showed that he had digested his loss to Jimmy Parker (USA) from the Jack Crawford Cup final and opened his Individual campaign with a 60 60 victory over the Australian team player Bruce Rehn. His rival Jimmy Parker waited equally little time in his first match against Noriji Kataoka from Japan.

In the women’s 60, 65 and 70, the top seeded players all had a bye today and the unseeded players caught up to the round of 32. Top seeds Tina Karwasky (USA), Gail Benedetti (FRA) and Heide Orth (GER) respectively will start tomorrow.

In the men’s and women’s 75 the top seeded players were not in action today.

In the men’s 80 event, top seed Lorne Main (CAN), second seed Robert Barwick (AUS) and third seed John Powless (USA) all won their matches comfortably and are through to the round of 16. In the women’s 80, second seed and defending champion Muffie Grieve (CAN) won her opening match easily today.

The men’s 85 singles also got underway today, with the hightlight of the day the match of the 2nd seed Clem Hopp (USA) against Guido Trevisan (ITA). Hopp came through with a close 64 64 victory.

In the women’s 85 singles, three quarterfinal matches were played today. The three top seeded players Erzsebet Szentirmay (HUN), Doris Jane Lutz (USA) and Rita Price (USA) won their matches in straight sets. Tomorrow, fourth seed Marlies Jennis (GER) will be playing against Elsie Crowe from Australia to complete the semifinal line-up.
