The Doris Hart Cup for women in the 80 age group was introduced in 2011 and since its inception Canada dominated the event. This year again, for the third consecutive time, the Canadian team was victorious. It was the only remaining final of the Super-Seniors World Team Championships that were successfully staged last week in the unique bi-national setup with two host nations, Austria and Czech Republic.
Warmbad Villach was the venue for that final between Canada and Australia. In the first singles, Rosemarie Asch (CAN) defeated Australia’s number 2 player Peg Hoysted 63 62. Australia’s Margaret Robinson, who just moved to the women’s 80 age group this year, took on current World Individual Champion Muffie Grieve (CAN) in an effort to level the tie. Grieve won the first set 62, but the Australian fought back to clinch the second set 75. Since the scoring format for the Doris Hart Cup was modified in 2013 so that a matchtiebreak is played instead of a third set, a tiebreak to 10 points was to determine the winner of the match. Grieve had the better nerves in this matchtiebreak and won it with the narrow score of 10-8, sealing the title for Canada, much to the joy of the Canadian supporters.
In the match for third-fourth playoff France had the better end in a thriller against Great Britain which went to the matchtiebreak of the decisive doubles. Sabine Leflaive and Yvette Laubus won 10-8 and proudly received the bronze medals in the presentation that followed.
The celebrations of the Canadian, Australian and French teams continued during the Opening Ceremony of the World Individual Championships that took place in the afternoon in Pörtschach for the age groups being played in Klagenfurt and Pörtschach and in Villach for the age groups being played at Villach. A group of Austrian percussionists were the highlight of the ceremonies that were followed by a Welcome Cocktail at both sites.
Play also got underway at the World Individual Championships with Singles and Mixed Doubles matches
