Marc Fornell-Mestres - October 2007
This month our featured player comes from Spain; he is 25-year-old Marc Fornell-Mestres. During the month he competed in three Futures tournaments all on his favoured clay court surface.
Marc’s first Futures tournament of October was held in Espinho, Portugal where he was seeded 2. The opening two rounds saw Marc win against players who came through the qualifying event then after a close quarter final win he faced fellow Spaniard Jose-Antonio Sanchez-De Luna. A third successive three set match for Marc this time ended in defeat and Jose-Antonio went on to win the final.
Onto Spain next for the Spain F38 and F39 Futures tournaments where Marc also took part in the doubles events with Jordi Marse-Vidri. Sant Cugat was the venue for the first of Marc’s two titles this month. For this tournament Marc was seeded 1 and as with the previous tournament Marc opened against a qualifier and promptly earned himself a 61 61 victory. Following a three set win in the 2nd round, Marc was again faced by a player from the qualifying event. With both players winning a set a piece, both by a 61 score line, Marc’s opponent retired from the match. 4th seed Hector Ruiz-Cadenas provided the opposition in the semi final and another three set victory saw Marc move into the final to play 7th seed Javier Genaro-Martinez, a player he met (and lost to) in the final of Spain F8 in late February 2007. There was no repeat of that final though as Marc ran out a 63 46 75 winner and claim his first singles Futures title since November 2006. Marc completed the double at this tournament by taking the doubles title, also as the number 1 seed.
Next up was a trip to Vilafranca for Spain F39. A quick exit from the doubles event here left Marc with just the singles event to focus on. This time seeded 2, Marc, for the third straight tournament, played a qualifier in the first round of the main draw. A 62 62 victory set up a meeting in the 2nd round with another qualifier and another straight sets win followed, this time 76(6) 62. Despite losing the first set of the quarter final to Carlos Poch-Gradin, Marc won through to the semi final by taking the next two sets 64 76(1). Italian player Alberto Brizzi, the number 4 seed, stood between Marc and a second successive singles final. After a close opening set which Marc edged 75 he moved into his fourth singles final of 2007 by taking the second set 62. In the final he played the top seed, Adrian Menendez-Maceiras. Marc managed to win two close sets 64 64 and with them his second singles Futures title of 2007.
To summarise, from his three tournaments in October, Marc won two singles titles and one doubles title. In singles competition he won 26 sets and lost 9. With his titles won this month Marc now has a total of 10 singles and 21 doubles Futures titles to his name. He is also now closing in on both his highest singles and doubles ATP ranking positions.
