Konstantinos Economidis (GRE)

MARCH 2006

Konstantinos Economidis, from Greece, is featured for March after an impressive run of form which has led to five consecutive Futures singles titles. All events took place in the Southern Hemisphere, with New Zealand F1, F2, Australia F3, F4 and F5 all being won by the 28 year old from Thessaloniki.

In total, he has played 25 matches, won 312 games and 50 sets. Throughout the 5 tournaments he has played, he has lost only 3 sets and amassed 90 points.

At New Zealand F1 in Blenheim, his toughest match came against second seed Scott Lipsky in the final where Economidis was stretched in 3 sets, winning 60 67(9) 62. In Hamilton the following week, Economidis did not lose a set, brushing past Jamie Baker from Great Britain 64 60 in the final.

Economidis then moved on to Australia, taking the title at F3, only dropping a set in the quarter finals to Stian Boretti (NOR) who he had also beaten in Hamilton the week before. In the final, he defeated the top seed, Damian Patriarca from Argentina 61 64.

At Australia F4 in Bairnsdale, Victoria, Economidis dropped a set in the second round, against the local player Joseph Sirianni. To win the title, he beat four Australians as well as his occacional doubles parter, Alexander Jakupovic, also from Greece.

The final tournament in this impressive run was at Sale, Victoria, where he again completed the event without dropping a set, living up to his top-seed billing.

It is worth noting that the Player of the Year for the previous 2 years have both won a total of 7 Futures titles in one year: Economidis has won 5 titles in only one calendar month, a feat that will be hard to emulate.

He did not fare so well in the doubles, however, losing in the first round of both New Zealand F1 and F2.
