Teenager Desai wins maiden singles title

GWALIOR, INDIA: Eighteen-year-old Zeel Desai claimed her first ITF Pro Circuit singles title in Gwalior on 5 March.

Desai, seeded eighth, took the title with a straight sets win over wild card Mahak Jain, who had eliminated the top seed in the semifinal.

"This has been an incredible tournament for me. The tournament was very well organised and I will definitely return here whenever an ITF [event] is organised here again," said Desai. "I am very happy as this is my first ITF [singles] title and now I am going to focus on my next tournament at Thailand."

The doubles event provided a second title win for the top seeds Natasha Palha and Rishika Sunkara. The Indian duo building upon their title triumph in their last outing together in Cairo, Egypt at the start of February with a 64 62 win in a clash between the top two seeded teams.

"It was a great week for both of us," Sunkara added. "It’s always amazing to win in your home country and we are really happy we could get the title. I really enjoyed playing with Natasha. It was a well organised tournament overall."
