Successful doubles title defence for Washington

News Article

The American city of Plantation in the state of Florida played host to its second women’s tournament on the ITF Pro Circuit the week commencing January 10th 2011.

Taking the titles at this event was Canadian 20-year old Sharon Fichman in the singles and the all-American team of Ahsha Rolle & Mashona Washington in the doubles. The doubles title for Washington represented a successful defence of the title won in 2010 with France’s Aurelie Vedy.

Fed Cup player Sharon Fichman’s title came following a 63 76(2) win as the eighth seed over her fellow 20-year old opponent from Romania, Alexandra Cadantu, seeded seventh and a five time singles champion on the ITF Pro Circuit in 2010 who is closing in on breaking into the WTA Top 200. This was Fichman’s fourth professional singles title of her career and a first since April 2009.

Top seeded American duo Ahsha Rolle & Mashona Washington claimed their second career title together following four victories over all-American partnerships. Their route to the final proved tough with match tie breaks deciding each of the first three rounds of the competition but in the fourth and final round a straight sets 64 62 victory over their unseeded opponents of Christina Fusano & Yasmin Schnack, conquerors of the second seeds in the semifinal, saw them take the title.
