$25,000 Phoenix - Anastasia Yakimova

Last week players arrived in Mauritius where Phoenix hosted the nations first ever professional Women’s tournament. The tournament offered $25,000 in prize money and attracted entrants from a number of highly WTA ranked players including Anastasia Yakimova from Belarus, Patricia Mayr from Austria and Britain’s Katie O’Brian all of whom have participated in Fed Cup.

The final was a tense encounter between Anastasia Yakimova and Patricia Mayr, currently ranked 108 and 121 respectively, with Mayr forced to retire in the third set resulting in Yakimova taking her end of year title, winning 36 62 10.

All players were impressed with this new addition to the calendar as Mayr says, “I wish to thank the tournament director and his team for their wonderful job and made all of us enjoy our tennis and stay in Mauritius” and the host can look forward to welcoming many players again next year as Marinne Giraud ranked 291 from Mauritius stated “I look forward for the next tournament”.

Player Comments - after semi finals

Marinne Giraud - "I played very well in the 1st set but Anastasia is a very good player and her tactics worn me out physically. I wish to congratulate her and wish her best of luck for the finals. But I had a wonderful tournament by winning against two better ranked players than me. I wish to thank my family, coach and the spectators for their wonderful support during the whole week. I look forward for the next tournament"

Anastasia Yakimova - "Marinne is a good player and she played a very good match. The 1st set was difficult for me and while I was leading 4-2, Marinne played superbly to come back at 4-4 and win the set 6-4. The 2nd & 3rd set was at my advantage and I feel I am playing better and better each day. I wish I win the final but Patricia is a very strong player. It will be a very good and pleasant match to watch. Mauritius and its people are so wonderful and I dream of winning this 1st edition and come back next year"

Patricia Mayr - "I was in a every good day though the 1st set could have gone either way. Irena is a very young and talented player and she will do very well in the future. I have no preference who I play in the final. I am very happy to have reached the final and I am getting more and more use to the local conditions. So I hope to play well in the final"

Player Comments - after final

Anastasia Yakimova - "It is wonderful to end my tennis calendar by winning a tournament. Patricia played really well in the first set by hitting the balls very hard. But fortunately she lost the momentum at the end of the first set when I picked up. I am so happy to have won this first edition. The organising team was fantastic and I have special thanks to the tournament director and Hotel Shandrani for having made my stay so cosy and enjoyable. My thanks also go to the sponsors for having made this tournament possible in a small island like Mauritius but the people at the Federation have a very big heart. I will definitely come back next year"

Patricia Mayr - "First of all I wish to congratulate Anastasia for her win and the superb tennis she played all the week. Secondly I am very sorry to the spectators for having been forced to retire at the beginning of the 3rd set but believe me I tried my best but was worn out physically and could hardly see the ball. But it was a wonderful week of tennis in Mauritius and I promise to do better next year. I wish to thank the tournament director and his team for their wonderful job and made all of us enjoy our tennis and stay in Mauritius."
