$25,000 Sutton - singles final - Kristina Mladenovic, Roy Staniland (LTA) and Mona Barthel
In the south of England's capital city of London, the week commencing January 31st 2011 saw the $25,000 Sutton ITF Pro Circuit tournament take place with the titles going to Kristina Mladenovic in the singles event with the team of Emma Laine and Melanie South taking the doubles crown.
The singles final saw the unseeded Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, 17, claim the title with a three set win over the 20-year old No. 4 seed from Germany, Mona Barthel. Barthel, who had started the week with a new career high singles ranking of 170, was denied a second singles title of 2011 as the French teenager took the title just when it appeared that the match had swung in favour of Barthel who levelled the match in the second set with the loss of just one game.
Mladenovic recovered quickly and decisively though and only dropped two games in the deciding set for a 63 16 62 victory for her first career singles title on the ITF Pro Circuit. This title win provided the 17-year old with another highlight to her career so early in 2011 following her call up to represent France at the Hopman Cup in Australia at the beginning of January.
Over in the doubles competition, the final was contested by the top two seeded teams and required a match tie break to finally decide the winners. No. 1 seeds Emma Laine & Melanie South, from Finland and Great Britain respectively, having taken the opening set 63 were brought back onto level terms when the Polish-Croatian partnership of Marta Domachowska & Darija Jurak narrowly won the second set 75.
In a closely fought match tie break it was Laine & South who came out on top to record a 63 57 [10-8] win and earn a fifth career doubles title together.
