$25,000 Lutz presentation
Canadian Sharon Fichman’s impressive start to 2009 continued as the 18-year old made it back-to-back singles and doubles finals appearances from her opening two tournaments, both held in Florida, USA.
Following on from her appearances in the singles and doubles finals in a $25,000 ITF Women’s Circuit event in Boca Raton, where she finished as runner-up in both finals, she made it through to the finals in Lutz, another $25,000 event on the ITF Women’s Circuit. Here she went one better than the previous week, and won both the singles and doubles titles.
After a 36 62 62 victory over the top seed in the first round in Lutz, Fichman progressed through the draw to the final where she won her first singles title since November 2005 with a 64 76(5) win over 19-year old third seed Lauren Albanese, in a match lasting 2hrs 11mins.
Despite suffering a defeat in the Boca Raton final, Fichman and Kim Couts continued with their partnership and this proved a wise decision by both players as they claimed the doubles title without losing a set all week.
