MIDLAND, MI, USA: Heather Watson and Anna Tatishvili will take to the court today (Thursday) twice, first as round two opponents in the singles event before returning later in the day as partners in the doubles event where they are seeded fourth.
Seventh seeded Tatishvili is one of six seeded players to have safely come through the opening round in singles which saw the event lose Romina Oprandi and Coco Vandeweghe, seeded third and fifth respectively.
The doubles event saw unseeded Americans Jan Abaza and Allie Will recover from an opening round first set loss to stun the top seeds Stephanie Foretz Gacon and Eva Hrdinova 46 63 [10-8]. This loss will leave Tatishvili and Watson as the sole remaining seeds in the top half of the draw providing they can overcome the challenge from Asia Muhammad and former Junior Grand Slam champion, in singles and doubles, Taylor Townsend.
The bottom half of the doubles draw also saw the seeds in trouble. With Sharon Fichman and Maria Sanchez, seeded two, and Eleni Daniilidou and Aleksandra Krunic, seeded three, losing their opening sets it looked like the top three doubles seeds were all going to be making shock exits.
Both, however, managed to stage recoveries and fight their way back into, and win, their respective matches to remain in the competition and on course for an anticipated semifinal showdown.
The order of play for Thursday is available to view in full online here and among the day’s highlights will be the sole representatives of the Czech Republic Katerina Siniakova and Lucie Hradecka taking on the top two seeds Urszula Radwanska and Lauren Davis respectively.
