The Czech flag blew at Tennis Club Biella where 26-year-old Renata Voracova clinched her third singles title of the year on the ITF Womens Circuit by defeating her fellow countrywoman and eighth seed Zuzana Ondraskova in the final of this Italian $100,000 ITF Pro Circuit tournament.
Sixth seed Voracova, boasting a WTA ranking of 97, looked in superlative form as she dropped just one set en route to winning the title, showing a rational and intelligent tennis-game all through the week.
Clay-court specialist Renata Voracova, who claimed both $25,000 titles in Cairo (Egypt) and Civitavecchia (Italy) during April, started slowly letting World No. 120 Zuzana Ondraskova open up a 2-0 lead in the first set but since that exact moment Voracova increased her serve power and managed to break twice her opponent in the sixth and eighth games. After having achieved the first set, Voracova earned a comfortable 4-1 lead in the second, finally triumphing 64 62.
Although being good friend, the two had never met before in a professional tennis competition. “I’m really very happy for this victory – said Voracova – After having won a lot of doubles titles, now I can enjoy this singles’ one. Zuzana is my friend but there could be just one winner on Sunday…I liked very much this place, I hope to play again in Biella”.
“Unfortunately I was not able to play my best tennis in the final round – said Ondraskova – I expected something a little more after I reached quarterfinals in 2004 and semi-finals in 2006 here in Biella. I also have to admit that Renata was determined to play very well in the most crucial moments”.
In the doubles event, third seeded Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine and Iona-Raluca Olaru of Romania clinched the title with a straight-set victory over fourth seeded Andreja Klepac of Slovenia and Aurelie Vedy of France, 75 64.
