This week sees the start of the main event for the first of three $60,000 women’s tournaments on the ITF Pro Circuit, the highest ITF prize money tournaments in the region during the opening quarter of 2017.

Leading the entrants into the first of this series, being held in Zhuhai, is Chinese world No. 103 Saisai Zheng, who will be amongst the favourites to succeed Olga Govortsova as champion with the 2016 champion absent from this year’s event.

In all, the tournament has attracted 33 players ranked within the WTA Top 300 and a former Top 10 player in Patty Schnyder, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 7 and is a potential danger in the qualifying event.

After this week's event, players will head east on a two-and-a-half-hour drive through the Guangdong Province to Shenzhen, where all main draw and qualifying draw positions have been filled by WTA Top 300 ranked players, making this a very tough event to win.

Zheng, who won her first professional singles title back in 2009 in Shenzhen, once again leads a field of entrants that features a number of former Top 40 players.

The final tournament in the series takes place following a one-week break, which any players making the journey by road will be thankful for as the tournament will see the players travelling further eastwards to Quanzhou in the Fujian Province, some seven and a half hours by road.

Entry is still open for this tournament (the entry deadline is 9 March) and amongst those currently entered is Qiang Wang, who will be looking to defend her 2016 title.

Wang, who also won the 2016 title in Shenzhen but is not entered to defend that title this year, will face stiff competition, particularly from fellow former title winners in Quanzhou – Jing-Jing Lu, Varatchaya Wongteanchai, Zarina Diyas and Elizaveta Kulichkova.
