In the Burundi capital, Bujumbura, last week, Austria’s Gerald Melzer added a third consecutive ITF Pro Circuit Burundi singles title to his collection in as many years.
Melzer’s tally began back in 2010 when he beat Belgium’s Bart Govaerts in the final 62 64. In 2011, Melzer returned to lift the trophy, with a straight sets win over South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse.
This year, Melzer took on Italy’s Alessandro Bega in the final, who he beat in last year’s semifinals, with a convincing 62 63 win. On his route to victory, he dropped just one set, in the second round, to Luca Pancaldi.
This latest win is a third ITF Pro Circuits singles title for the twenty-two-year old in 2012, whose current ATP Ranking stands at 320.
Melzer teams up, this week, with fellow compatriot, Lukas Jastraunig, in Rwanda. Jastraunig joined Melzer on last week's podium in Burundi, after picking up the doubles trophy with Mark Vervoort (NED).
Melzer and Jastraunig will be hoping to replicate their winning form from their success in Rwanda in 2011 and add a second 2012 title to their partnership haul after a win in October at Algeria F1.
