17-year old wins in debut final appearance

In a rainy and freezing cold Gliwice, Poland, 17-year old Paula Kania was having the best week of her professional career to date. The sixth seed from Poland was featuring in her debut singles final on the ITF Pro Circuit where she was up agains the No. 1 seed, Anna Korzeniak, also from Poland, who was contesting her second final of the year.

In a rain interuppted match which stretched the match out to 7hrs 30mins (actual on court playing time was 3hrs 14mins) Kania prevailed to claim her first title, winning 76(2) 36 75, in front of great support. Kania lives not to far from Gliwice.

Polish players also dominated in the doubles event and for only the second time on the ITF Pro Circuit, all four semifinalists were from Poland. The only other time this occurred was back in Gydnia in May 2004. The title was eventually claimed by No. 3 seeds Justyna Jegiolka & Katarzyna Kawa who won 62 76(4) over No. 4 seeds Olga Brozda & Veronika Domagala.

Throughout the week, and despite the bad weather, plenty of spectators arrived each day to take in the tennis action, Gliwice is certainly a town of tennis fans!
