Dementieva and Williams sisters win Olympic gold
Elena Dementieva made an impressive comeback against her compatriot Dinara Safina to win women's singles gold at the Olympic Tennis Event in Beijing. The No. 5 seed fought back from a set down to defeat sixth-seeded Safina 36 75 63 in 2 hours 34 minutes. This was the second career Olympic medal for Dementieva, who won silver eight years ago in Sydney, when she lost to Venus Williams in the singles final. She defeated Venus's sister Serena in the quarterfinals of this year's event.

There was consolation for the Williams sisters, who both suffered quarterfinals singles defeats, when they won their second Olympic doubles gold, following their victory in Sydney. Seeded No. 2, they overwhelmed Spain's No. 4 seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual 62 60 in the final.
