Safina and Dementieva set up all Russian final
Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina will contest an all-Russian women's singles final at the Olympic Tennis Event on Sunday after the two players scored straight sets victories in Saturday's semifinals. Russia is now guaranteed its first-ever gold medal in women's tennis.

Safina, who was on court until 3.35am the previous night before losing her women's doubles quarterfinal, took advantage of a nervous display by home favourite Li Na to win 76(3) 75. Li led 5-3 in the second set but was unable to capitalise on her lead with a host of unforced errors. Dementieva, the silver medallist from Sydney, when she lost to Venus Williams in the final, was too strong for her compatriot Vera Zvonareva, winning 63 76(3). Zvonareva managed to save two match points to force a second-set tiebreak before conceding defeat.

Safina holds a 5-2 head-to-head lead over Dementieva in previous meetings, although Dementieva has won both match-ups on hard court.
