Japan - 2018 JDC Asia/Oceania Final-Qualifying

Japan, Uzbekistan, Australia and Hong Kong, China all secured places in September’s Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals after qualifying in the top four positions at the Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying event in Kuching, Malaysia last week.

With under-16 teams from sixteen nations from the Asia/Oceania zone battling it out on 9-14 April for four available spots in the Finals in Budapest, Japan stole the show - completing its undefeated week with a 3-0 triumph over Uzbekistan in the final.

Wins for Shintaro Mochizuki and Shunsuke Mitsui in the singles, over Azizbek Dadabaev and Omlimjon Nabiev, respectively, secured their victory, before Mitsui and Kei Manaka completed the job after beating the Uzbek duo in the doubles.

Japan had progressed to the final with Group stage wins over Philippines, Pacific Oceania and Singapore without so much as losing a set, followed by 2-1 wins over India and Australia in the knockout stages.

Japan, incidentally, is the last nation from the Asia/Oceania region to win the Junior Davis Cup, having beaten Canada in the Final when the event was held in San Luis Potosi back in 2010.

Meanwhile, Australia secured third place by defeating Hong Kong, China courtesy of singles wins for Cooper White and Tai Leonard Sach.

The Asia/Oceania final qualifying event for the girls’ competition – the Junior Fed Cup Finals – follows this week on 16-21 April.
