Guatemala’s under 14 girls’ team triumphed on home soil at the World Junior Tennis North/Central American and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event in Guatemala City on 19-24 March.

With just one team at the Guatemala event earning a place in the final qualifying event in Mexico City on 26-28 April, the top seeds proved dominant from start to finish.

The Guatemalan team, comprised of Zimena Morales, Deborah Dominguez and Natalia Vela, didn’t drop so much as a set until the final – cruising to the deciding match courtesy of 3-0 victories over Panama, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago and Dominican Republic.

In the deciding tie against El Salvador, Morales gave the Guatemalan’s the perfect start, cruising to a 62 62 victory over Alessandra Cristiani, but the second seeds finally found a weakness in the host nation's armour in the second rubber when Martia Cristiani overcame Dominguez 64 67(7) 63.

Guatemala hit back in the decider, wrapping up the doubles 63 63 in just 47 minutes to ensure their safe progress to the next round of qualifying in Mexico next month.

This week sees the boys’ final qualifying event for the Asia/Oceania region take place in Bangkok, Thailand on 26-31 March, with the girls’ event to follow next week.

This week’s action will see the first four boys’ teams confirmed for the World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov on 6-11 August, when 16 nations will battle it out in each of the boys’ and girls’ events for the chance to become the under 14 world champions.
