The ITF is saddened to learn of the death of Dr Javier Maquirriain, the former doctor of the Argentine Davis Cup team, who passed away on 6 March at the age of 55 as a result of a brain tumour.

Maquirriain was, until recently, a member of the ITF Sport Science & Medicine Commission. Among his many other roles, he was Chief Doctor for the Argentine Tennis Federation, a Davis Cup physician, a philanthropist, an orthopaedic surgeon, a researcher, an author, and the President of the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science from 2011-2015.

Maquirriain was an outstanding interclub tennis player in the 1970s and went on to play Padel Tennis professionally in Argentina, while continuing to study medicine.

A specialist in Sports Medicine and traumatology, Maquirriain became the official doctor of the Argentine Davis Cup team in 1996 and was a well-loved figure within the team. Twenty years later, he was part of the group that won its first Davis Cup title, travelling to Poland, Italy and Great Britain in 2016, but proving too unwell to attend the final in Zagreb.

After defeating Croatia 3-2 to secure Argentina's first title after four runner-up finishes, Daniel Orsanic’s team sported a flag that read ‘Fuerza Maqui’ in support of Maquirriain, before Orsanic delivered some emotional words in the post-final press conference.

"He could not be here physically, but he is inside our hearts,” said Orsanic. “We know that at this moment he must be very excited with his family, he is a boss, a winner, he is inside us.”

The likes of Federico Delbonis and Gabriela Sabatini paid their tributes to Maquirriain on social media (translated from Spanish):

Federico Delbonis: "Sad news for Everyone we love. You'll always be with us Maqui. A strong hug to all his family and a lot of strength to overcome this difficult moment. We're going to miss you, Doc. #QEPD #JavierMaquirriain"

Gabriela Sabatini: "Much sadness over the death of Javier Maquirriain all my affection to his family and loved ones. RIP"
