Twenty-three and counting for Osorio Serrano

Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano won her 23rd consecutive match on the ITF Junior circuit on Sunday when she lifted the title at the Banana Bowl in Brazil, her fourth consecutive title.

Osorio’s impressive run of form dates back to last year’s ITF Junior Masters. After falling to Marta Kostyuk and Kaja Juvan, who later contested the final, in the round robin group stages, Osorio won both play-off matches, against Sofia Sewing and Wang Xinyu, to secure a 5th-place finish in Chengdu.

That was her final tournament in 2017, and she started the 2018 season in style. As top seed at the Coffee Bowl in Costa Rica, the Colombian defeated four other seeded players to lift the title.

Osorio only turned 16 in December and made her way back to her native Colombia for the Copa Barranquilla Capital de Vida, her second tournament of the year. Again seeded No. 1, the home favourite won the title without dropping a set.

The Asuncion Bowl in Paraguay was next on the list and Osorio was in imperious form once more, reaching the semifinals without the loss of a set. However, facing Hailey Baptiste in the last four, Osorio dropped the opening set for the first time in this run. She battled back to win in a third set tiebreak and stormed through the final to lift the title.

Last week in the Banana Bowl, she came through two three-set matches to reach the semifinals, and did not drop another set as she stormed to the title, defeating American Alexa Noel in the final.
