Sri Lanka hosts World Team Cup Asian Qualification

Four men’s teams and two women’s teams representing five different countries are contesting the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Asian Qualification this week in Colombo Sri Lanka.

One men’s team and one women’s team will earn qualification for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup finals in Apeldoorn, Netherlands on 28 May to 3 June.

Former BNP Paribas World Team Cup champion Japan is top for the men’s qualification event in Colombo. China, P.R. won the Asian Qualification in 2016 before also winning men’s World Group 2 in 2016, the last year in which there were two men’s world groups.

All four of Japan’s nominated players are world ranked inside the Top 30, with the team led by world No. 8 Takashi Sanada and wold No. 15 Kouhei Suzuki. All four of Japan’s nominated players are also ranked higher than the highest ranked players in the teams from China, P.R., Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

Japan plays Malaysia on Thursday’s first of three days of round-robin competition, with China, P.R, playing host nation Sri Lanka. The top two teams after the three days of round-robin ties will then meet again in the final.

In the women’s event, Korea, Rep. and Malaysia will play each other a maximum of three times on the first, third and fourth days of competition.

Former world No. 7 and current world No. 18 Ju-Youn Park of Korea, Rep. is the highest ranked player se to be in action in the women’s event.

Each tie in the men’s and women’s events consists of two singles rubbers and a doubles rubber.
