Morocco’s men’s team and Kenya’s women’s team were victorious on Sunday at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup African Qualification in Nairobi.

Morocco will now contest the men’s event for the fifth time at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup finals in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, while Kenya has qualified to contest the women’s event for the third time.

Morocco dropped just three games in the opening singles rubber and three games in the doubles rubber of the men’s final to beat Egypt 3-0.

Said Himan’s’s 63 60 win over Tarek Abbas Gharib Zahry was followed by a dominant performance from world No. 47 Lhaj Boukartacha, who defeated Mohamed Sobhy SobhyRagab Abdelhafez 60 60, with Morocco also winning the doubles 63 60 to seal victory in the Africa Qualification for the second time in three years.

Host nation Kenya finished third in the men’s event after a 3-0 win over last year’s winner Tanzania, while Ghana defeated Rwanda 3-0 to claim fifth place.

Kenya women earn doubles victory over Tanzania

Top seed Kenya earned victory in the women’s event for the second successive year courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Tanzania.

The 2017 final also finished 2-1, despite Kenya having won both singles rubbers against Tanzania on that occasion. However, the story of his year’s final was much different after world No. 108 Jane Ndenga had given the host nation the lead with her 63 62 win over Lucy Shirima.

A year ago Ndenga had beaten Rehema Selemani in her singles rubber, but this year the respective singles rankings of the Kenyan players meant that Selemani faced world No. 91 Phoebe Masika in the second singles rubber of the tie. Selemani ensured that the qualification spot would be decided in the doubles after beating Masika 63 36 63, but Masika and Ndenga proved too experienced in the doubles and they sealed a 62 62 win to earn Kenya the overall victory and the qualification spot for Apeldoorn.

The 2018 BNP Paribas World Team Cup finals will take place in Apeldoorn on 28 May to 3 June.

The BNP Paribas World Team Cup Asian Qualification will take place later this week in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with the European Qualification in Vilamoura, Portugal in April.
