USA’s men’s team reversed the result of its round-robin tie earlier in the week against Chile to win the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Americas Qualification on Friday at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona, Orlando, Florida.

With Argentina having already won the women’s event after beating Colombia 2-1 on two successive days, both USA and Argentina went one better than in 2017, when both teams finished runners-up to Brazil at the Americas Qualification.

USA will now return to the men’s competition at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup finals for the first time since 2016 when the ITF’s flagship wheelchair tennis team event takes places this year in Apeldoorn, Netherlands from 28 May to 3 June.

The opening singles rubber proved to be the main difference between Wednesday’s round-robin tie and Friday’s final as world No. 51 Chris Herman bounced back from a 63 62 loss to Francisco Cayulef to beat the 31-year-old Chilean 64 64.

World No. 38 Casey Ratzlaff had already beaten Alexander Cataldo for the loss of just three games in the round-robin tie between USA and Chile.  Cataldo provided more resistance in Friday’s final, but his efforts to take the contest to a deciding doubles rubber ultimately proved fruitless and 19-year Ratzlaff wrapped up a tense 76(3) 46 64 win to earn USA the overall victory 2-0.

Colombia took third place after a 2-0 win over Ecuador. Eliecer Oquendo Barrios finished the week unbeaten in his four singles matches after defeating Eduardo Lopez 62 62 and Manuel Sanchez beat Ecuador’s Francisco Beltran 62 26 76(2).

After Argentina's women secured back-to-back 2-1 wins over Colombia earlier in the week Argentina will now contest the women's event at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup finals for the first time since 2006.
