USA and Chile came out as winners of their first round-robin ties on Tuesday as the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Americas Qualification got underway at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona, Orlando, Florida.

The first of three days of round-robin ties in the men’s event produced a tense victory for USA after Chris Herman and Casey Ratzlaff battled back from a set down to defeat Colombia in a deciding match tiebreak in the deciding doubles.

World No. 51 Herman managed to force a deciding set in the first singles rubber of the tie as he took on the vastly experienced Eliecer Oquendo Barrios for the first time. However, 20-year-old Herman could not sustain his challenge in the third set and former world No. 28 Oquendo Barrios secured the win 62 67(3) 62 for Colombia.

The second singles rubber proved decidedly more one-sided as world No. 38 Casey Ratzlaff swept past Manuel Sanchez 60 61.

Colombia’s hopes of causing an early upset improved when Oquendo Barrios and Sanchez sped through the opening set of the all-important doubles contest. But Herman and Ratzlaff found the edge they needed to eventually wrap up the tie 2-1, having recovered from 5-1 down in the match tiebreakk to earn a 16 64 (11-9) victory.

Top seed USA now faces second seed Chile on Wednesday’s second day of action after Chile’s 3-0 win over Ecuador.

Jaime Sepulveda’s 61 75 win over Eduardo’s Lopez was the closest of the tie’s three rubbers, with world No. 29 Alexander Cataldo easing to a 61 60 win over Francisco Beltran and the partnering Francisc Cayuelf to win the doubles rubber 60 60.

Wednesday's second day of play in Orlando features the start of the women's event featriing Argentina and Colombia.
