Cortez wins Garopaba event with youngster Casadei

For the first time on the Tour, the city of Garopaba in Santa Catarina, Brazil, played host to an ITF beach tennis tournament on 15-17 December.

A total of 543 players from a number of different countries (Brazil, Italy, Aruba, Argentina, Spain and the Netherlands) took part in the beach tennis action, spread over 32 courts on Ferrugem Beach, with a trio of Italians and one Brazilian winning the main titles at the $10,000 event.

In the Women's Doubles, Rio de Janeiro-born Joana Cortez and youngster, 19 year-old Italian Veronica Casadei beat Brazilian duo Lorena Melo and Flavia Muniz in the final, 75 63.

Former No.1 and current No.6 Cortez reflected on her win with Casadei: "She is a very talented young girl. We had difficult matches on the last day but managed to win. I am very happy with this title to close the year".

In the Men's event, three-time World Champion, Alessandro Calbucci and his partner Italian Andrea Stuto fought back in the final against Thales Santos and Marcus Ferreira from Santos, eventually winning 46 64 63. At 37, this was the 3rd title of the year for Calbucci, currently ranked 7th in the ITF rankings.

Santa Caterina-born, 2016 World Champion Rafaella Miiller and former No.1 Venezeulan Patricia Diaz, were knocked out in the second round by Nathalia Font and Sofia Kelbert.

This was not the only upset of the tournament as former World No.1, Alex Mingozzi and Brazilian Raffael Agulha were defeated in the first round by Antonio Vollmer and Joao Lauro Carniero, younger brother of Diogo Carneiro, the highest-ranked Brazilian player on the Tour currently.  

In the Mixed Doubles, the title was won by Rafaella Miiller and World No. 5 Vinicius Font after beating Aruban Aksel Samardzic and his partner Patricia Diaz in the final.
