VALENCIA, SPAIN: Ranked inside the WTA Top 200 at a career high of 174 towards the end of September this year, Irina Maria Bara has since slipped down the rankings but victory in Spain at the $25,000 Valencia tournament could prove to be the springboard to a climb back up the ladder.

The 22-year-old Romanian seemingly eased through the rounds as the second seed recording a series of straight sets wins to reach the semifinal.  Here she dropped the second set in victory over the last remaining Spaniard in the draw, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, who as fourth seed, was also the only other seed to reach the final four.

Irina Maria Bara (ROU) and Olga Danilovic (SRB)In the title match she came up against Serbian wild card Olga Danilovic who, like Bara, was looking for a second title from three 2017 final appearances.

Danilovic came into this week’s tournament at a new career high of 363 and by the time she reached the final, had not dropped a set all week. The Serbian looked on course to take the title when inflicting a second set loss of the week on Bara as she opened with a 75 win but Bara would restrict her opponent to just four more games over the course of the match, all coming in the second set, as she ran out a 57 64 60 winner to gain valuable ranking points as she eyes that return to the Top 200.
